Increasing attention is being given to exploring whether fatigue in patients with cancer experiencing similar symptoms can be classified or grouped into specific clinically significant subtypes. Various methods have been used to classify these patients according to subtype, including 1) definitional, 2) severity, 3) qualitative, 4) treatment-related, 5) disease-related, 6) symptom cluster, and 7) putative mechanisms.
The authors wish to acknowledge Dr. Ann M. Berger's review of this manuscript and the unknown individuals who provided blinded reviews. A special thank you to Dr. Pamela S. Hinds, PhD, RN, FAAN, who provided key cancer-related fatigue articles on children, adolescents, and parents experiencing the diagnosis and treatment of cancer; without her help, our “adult slip/pants” might have been showing.
