Alan N. Houghton, MD, began his Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center career as a clinical fellow more than 25 years ago. A pioneer in cancer immunology, he was the first to show that treatment with monoclonal antibodies can lead to reproducible tumor responses in cancer patients with solid tumors, among many other major accomplishments. Dr. Houghton currently is incumbent of the Virginia and Daniel K. Ludwig Chair in Clinical Investigation and Vice Chairman of Academic Affairs in the Department of Medicine.
Among his many academic positions, he served as Chair of the Immunology Program in the Sloan-Kettering Institute from 1995 to 2004 and is currently Head of the Melanoma Disease Management Team. He has received numerous honors and awards for his research, including Enid A. Haupt Chair in Clinical Investigation, C. Chester Stock Prize for Cancer Research, Distinguished Achievement Award from American Skin Association, and SMR Clinical Researcher Award 2007 from Society Melanoma Research.
Dr. Houghton has taught many students as Professor at Weill Graduate School of Medicine, and mentored postdoctoral fellows, molecular biologists, immunologists, medical oncologists, and surgeons. He is the 2008 recipient of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Junior Faculty Council Award for Excellence in Mentoring, cited as a role model and “a generous mentor who strives to have us all succeed.” Dr. Houghton is also the former Chair of the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines Melanoma Panel.
