Christopher E. Desch, MD, was the National Medical Director of the NCCN and Co-Editor-in-Chief of JNCCN. Dr. Desch was killed in a private plane crash near Richmond, Virginia, on Sunday, December 10th. As National Medical Director, Dr. Desch served as the clinical leader for the broad spectrum of NCCN programs, including the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology™. During his tenure with NCCN and JNCCN, Dr. Desch was an engaging presence whose clinical expertise was only matched by his warmth. He was both an accomplished practicing oncologist and a nationally recognized thought leader in the areas of health services research, quality of care, and policy. He was Chair of the Health Services Committee at the American Society of Clinical Oncology and had been a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Hematology, and the Virginia Society of Hematology/Oncology. Dr. Desch always demonstrated a remarkable dedication to his work, the patients he served and the family he loved. His death is a tragic loss for both NCCN and the greater oncology community.
