Margaret A. Tempero, MD, Named Editor-in-Chief of JNCCN
JNCCN - Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network has named Margaret A. Tempero, MD, as Editor-in-Chief. Dr. Tempero assumed the position of Editor-in-Chief on February 3, 2014, succeeding Harold J. Burstein, MD, PhD, who served in the position for 5 years.

Carlson, MD, Chief Executive Officer, NCCN. “Dr. Tempero’s highly esteemed career and demonstration of leadership in oncology research and practice, coupled with her expansive knowledge of and experience with professional publications, make her an ideal individual to oversee the operations of JNCCN.”
Dr. Tempero is Director of the UCSF Pancreas Center and Professor of Medicine, at UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center—one of the 23 NCCN Member Institutions. After joining UCSF in 2000, Dr. Tempero held numerous positions including, but not limited to, Deputy Director of the Cancer Center and Chief of Medical Oncology. Prior to joining the UCSF faculty, Dr. Tempero served for 17 years at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center at The Nebraska Medical Center, where she was Deputy Director and Professor of Medicine. During that time, Dr. Tempero also served as Chief of Oncology and Hematology at Omaha VA Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Dr. Tempero has a long-standing history of leadership and service with NCCN. In addition to being a founding member of the NCCN Board of Directors, over the last 18 years, she has acted as Chairperson of the NCCN Guidelines Panel for Pancreatic Cancer, and, since 2003, served on the JNCCN Editorial Board. Dr. Tempero is also a long-time contributor to the NCCN Oncology Research Program, participating in Scientific Review Committees, as well as ORP working groups. Further, she is an active member of the NCCN Continuing Medical Education Advisory Committee.
Outside of her work with JNCCN, Dr. Tempero has lent her expertise as an associate editor on the editorial boards for many professional publications in internal medicine and oncology. Dr. Tempero has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, 2 books, and 30 book chapters. Since 1981, Dr. Tempero has spoken at more than 300 international, national, and regional conferences, meetings, and symposia. In addition, Dr. Tempero serves as an advisor for research programs at many institutions, such as The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; Mayo Clinic; University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center; University of Arizona; University of California, Los Angeles; and the University of Chicago at Illinois, as well as for the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). She has also served on the Oncology Drug Advisory Committee for the FDA.
Indeed, Dr. Tempero has held numerous esteemed appointments, including President of ASCO in 2003-2004; she is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Association of Northern California Oncologists (ANCO), as well as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) and the V Foundation. She served on the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) from 1998 to 2006, and served as Chair of Subcommittee A.

NCCN Appoints Gary Weyhmuller as Chief Operating Officer
NCCN has appointed Gary Weyhmuller, MBA, as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
“NCCN enthusiastically welcomes Mr. Weyhmuller as Chief Operating Officer,” said Robert W. Carlson, MD, Chief Executive Officer, NCCN. “From his time at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Gary brings with him a wealth and breadth of experience and knowledge in administration, business, and academic cancer centers that will strongly benefit the organization.”
Mr. Weyhmuller comes to NCCN with more than 35 years of experience at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—one of the 23 NCCN Member Institutions. Most recently, Mr. Weyhmuller served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Fox Chase Cancer Center. In this role, he acted as Chief Strategist and Advisor to the President and CEO, as well as a liaison to the Center’s Board of Directors. Mr. Weyhmuller was indeed responsible for leadership and oversight of the daily operations supporting all research, clinical, and operational activities for more than 2400 employees.
In 2012, Mr. Weyhmuller played an essential role in the successful integration of Fox Chase Cancer Center with Jeanes Hospital, an acute care community hospital and part of the Temple University Health System. Since the integration, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Temple Health, has significantly expanded their presence in outpatient and surgical-care services.
Prior to his appointment as Chief Operating Officer at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Mr. Weyhmuller held several leadership roles within the organization, including Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Administrative Officer. Mr. Weyhmuller has held 15 professional affiliations, including memberships in the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), the American Hospital Association (AHA), the Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI), the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society for Human Resource Management.
“I am extremely excited and enthusiastic about joining NCCN and working with Bob Carlson and the NCCN team,” said Mr. Weyhmuller. “I have been associated with NCCN for many years while in my role at Fox Chase Cancer Center, and I look forward to this tremendous opportunity to be a part of the organization in a direct way and provide service to the NCCN Member Institutions.”
Outside of his professional career, Mr. Weyhmuller demonstrates an active history of community service. Currently, Mr. Weyhmuller is Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for American Heritage Federal Credit Union and a member of the Board of Directors for United Cerebral Palsy of Philadelphia and Vicinity, of which he served as President from 2008-2011. In addition, he has been an active board member for the Corporate Lay Board of Directors - Highmark, Inc. and Methodist Home for Children, Philadelphia.
Among his accolades, Mr. Weyhmuller has been recognized for his leadership, both professionally and through his community service, including the Fox Chase Cancer Center Inspired Leadership Award; recognition for Leadership and Personal Dedication on Behalf of People with Disabilities from United Cerebral Palsy of Philadelphia and Vicinity; and the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce Crystal Vision Award.
Mr. Weyhmuller holds a Master of Business Administration degree from LaSalle University in Philadelphia and graduated from West Chester University, West Chester, Pennsylvania, with a Bachelor of Science degree in education, political science, and minority studies. Mr. Weyhmuller also earned Senior Professional in Human Resources Certification from Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Weyhmuller officially joined NCCN on February 3, 2014.
